I had an identical pair that I used from '93-'96 until they got stolen (with my bike!). The earlier set had a better mounting system in my opinion. Jandd "improved" the bottom hook, and made them much, much harder to install/remove. I take mine off and on |

Too many straps. Mounting system only average and not suitable for changing from one bike to the next. Difficult to pack and load. |

The expandability is nice, but annoying for most of my rides. I tool around town and the extra straps can get in the way. It is nice to have then expandability when buying more at the grocery store than planned. :) |

I also own a set of mountain Large from JANDD.
I chose these panniers for their construction, which is excellent, they have gone from the continental divide trail to Tasmania with ease. the only stumbling points are the little wire hooks and backstrap that hold them on need improvement and they are a little heavy. excellent choice for durability. |

The only reason I would not recommend these is because there are other panniers out there with better mounting systems. I bought Jandds for the GF and Arkels for myself, for comparison sake. Ease of mounting is night and day betwwen the two. I almost felt sorry for my girlfriend for making her deal with that lousy set-up. They were fine for on road expeditions and rail trails, but serious mountainbikers should look elsewhere (I am very happy with my Arkels for such purposes). The Jandd locking system didn't secure the bag to the rack too well, often it dangled from the rack by one hook after a drop-off or good sized bump. Part of this may be due toi the fact that it is so difficult to mount securely.
The expandibility is another issue. Since it expands upwards, it moves the center of gravity up, as well as blocks the rack from use with horizontally place items. If you want a smaller bag on the road, with the ability to occasionally expand, this is fine, otherwise, just buy a bigger and wider bag. |

I had to tie the bags to my racks to keep them in place. Once tied they are very stable but I can not remove them without allot of work.
Compression straps dangle and can get just possibly getin the way of the wheel. I would have cordlocks to set length and trap excess webbing when carrying small loads. There are allot of straps hanging off these bags, I am tieing them up to each other to keep them out of the wheels. With full loads this is not a problem.
The black color is a BAD CHOICE it makes it very hard to see your gear in the evening when looking for anything that is not on top.
These were a good deal on EBay and worth putting upm with the hassels given the cost and very low weight to volume ratio.
They do not leak in heavy rain, I still use plastic garbage can sacks inside. |
