Since we were going to use these panniers on a tandem, Arkel put a Thermarest pocket on each pannier - and they make them in a larger than normal size to fit our Camp Rest LE pads. They worked great on our cross-country trip

The j-hooks are of unfinished aluminum with edges sharp enough to tear up the paint on your racks. Both my Tubus Cargo rear and Bruce Gordon front racks are very scratched up from using these panniers. Arkel should dip them in that rubber they use for coating tool handles or something.

I love em. Can't think of anything I'd change. They're big too-using with GT-30 front panniers everything I took on the Trans-Am fit inside including 3-season,2person tent, sleeping bag and pad. I had nothing on top of my rack. Arkel was wonderful to deal with also-I had concerns about heal clearance and they helped me determine in advance that that wouldn't be a problem.

I used only these panniers for my tour, and they more than adquately held all I needed for my fully self-contained trip. They are very quick to get into, and pack very easily. I did experience some minor fabric wear-through where the bottom stay of rack rubs against the back side of the panniers. All in all, I really enjoyed traveling with these Arkel panniers.

I took these pannier as well as their front counterpart on a tour of New Zealand. They are a little heavy out of the box then I had to add waterproof liners, which made them even heavier. The locking mechanism doesn't work on standard Blackburn lowrider front and expedition rear racks. The front panniers are too low to the ground causing a safety problem when riding next to curbs. To many pockets - I left detachable portions at home to lighten up the load. The mattress holder is a nice idea but adds weight. The front pannier mesh pocket was destroyed by rubbing up against curbs using the Blackburn lowrider rack.

Just a little more water proof. They sell the mounting system seperately so people can add to their currently owned pannier system. It is very good.

Awesome panniers - obviously Arkel people are touring because they are so well thought out. They are not waterproof but i still rate them 5/5 because it is understood that they are not. Rain covers are easily taking care of that.

Very well made and I would highly recommend them. Only a couple (minor) quibbles:1)"Shower" pocket has only 1 small patch of velcro to keep flap closed. Not good for bulky items (like shower stuff!). A strap and buckle like on opposite pannier would be nice . 2)Rain covers a tad small when panniers are stuffed. 3)An optional smaller thermarest tube for people like me who use a 20" pad rather than a 24" pad. Like I said, minor issues...
